The Nematomorpha is a parasite. They are born inside the body of land-dwelling insects such as grasshoppers & mantis... they absorb nutrients from their host until they reach adulthood...

Once the Nematomorpha reach adulthood, they would be ready for reproduction.. but... they can only reproduce exclusively outside of the host body in freshwater... so...

The parasite would chemically manipulate the land dwelling host nervous system to lose the fear of water.. the host would then march into freshwater drowning itself...the parasite will then burst out of the host body...
